George Nelson, an architect by training, was one of the most important and influential figures in American design. In a highly influential role as Design Director of Herman Miller he promoted the talents of Charles and Ray Eames, Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi, among others. In addition to his work in architecture, product and exhibition design, Nelson wrote several publications on design theory, including Problems of Design, George Nelson on Design and The Design of Modern Design.
Vitra has produced and marketed designs by Nelson since 1957 and has exclusive rights to Nelson-designed pieces within Europe and the Middle East. These include the ‘Nelson Bench’, the ‘Coconut Chair’ the ‘Marshmallow Sofa’ and ‘Nelson Tables’. Vitra also produces the range of Nelson clocks, originally designed for the Howard Miller Company.
